DAWN welcomes Speaker Shongwe’s dress ruling apology

Date: 20 May 2015
Release: Immediate

The DA Women’s Network in Mpumalanga welcomes the apology made by Speaker Thandi Shongwe yesterday during a sitting of the Mpumalanga Legislature, to Jane Sithole and the DA.

She also ordered ANC member Mr Windvoël to withdraw his remarks, which he did.

On 31 March 2015, during a legislature sitting, Hon. Windvoël, objected to the dress worn by Jane Sithole calling it a “sex-worker dress”, and the Speaker immediately ruled that the dress was too revealing to be worn in the house and that it was not in line with the decorum of the house.

The history of women’s political organization, our struggle for equal rights, for our community rights and, importantly, for full gender equality, was undermined by Speaker Shongwe in her March 2015 ruling against Sithole.

We cannot allow ourselves as women to be taken back to the days when we were voiceless, where we were scorned and treated with little or no respect. We must remind ourselves of the legacy of past discrimination – not just to find answers for the future, but also to inspire generations of women to come.

DAWN will continue to fight for those women who don’t have a voice.
